Salvation Mountain: A Beacon of Love in the Desert

The barren slopes of Imperial County’s desert plains can leave very little to the imagination. The typical frame of reference for the land east of the Salton Sea is a seemingly endless stretch of sand, rock, and expired plant life suffocating underneath a blanket of sweltering heat.

Chaparral Exclusive: John & Jacob bring back old school style and grooves

Although Stagecoach is known for playing music that appeals to red-white-and-blue-blooded country and bluegrass lovers, this year’s festival held the door open for a wide variety of genres to make their way across its three stages. Jazz percussions, folksy guitar plucking, and good old fashioned rock ‘n’ roll riffs made a loud statement on the grounds previously dominated by banjos and fiddles.

Mom's special day

She's there when you first wake up in the morning--a personal alarm clock with a smile. She's there in the afternoon when daylight is winding down and a familiar, soft voice sounds like home. And she's there as you drift away to sleep with subconscious thoughts of a warm embrace cradling you until darkness falls.

About

CRYSTAL HARRELL

I have cultivated a career in journalism for the past six years--starting in my freshman year of high school where I became part of the Hawkview newspaper staff. I fulfilled the positions of Reporter, Copy Editor, and Assistant Editor before becoming Editor-in-Chief at the start of my senior year.

During that time, I also contributed to various local media outlets like The Desert Sun, After School Magazine, and Palm Desert Patch. I covered a variety of events as a student reporter, including participating in the University of Southern California's High School Journalism Day in 2012, having my film reviews recognized by the Palm Springs Film Festival, and attending the Desert Town Hall Speaker Series for two consecutive years, where I got to interview the likes of New York Times columnist David Brooks and former U.S. General Stanley McChrystal.

I recently graduated with an AA degree in Journalism from College of the Desert, where I was Editor-in-Chief of the campus newspaper, The Chaparral. I have contributed to outlets like Coachella Valley Weekly, interviewed performers of the 2015 Stagecoach Country Music Festival, and reported on the annual Fashion Week El Paseo with fashion icon Gemma Kahng. In addition, I covered the 2016 Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala Red Carpet on behalf of KCOD CoachellaFM, the College of the Desert radio station.

I also interned at the KMIR Television Station in Palm Desert, and am currently enrolled at California State University-San Bernardino to pursue my BA in Communications and Media Studies.

Writing is what I love to do and where most of my passion stems from. I am determined to take part in a career that enables me to utilize my skills and interests in a professional setting.
